I will not be "going" to see this movie because I choose to not support the secular film industry, in general, either with my funds or influence as an attendee. As a member of the media I occasionally screen movies in private for commentary purposes.

This movie frightens me. If it is true that this film was written by the UK most devout Athiest and that he hates Christ and all He stands for I could in no way support such a movie.

How about, "No, I will not be going to see it because I don't go to movies in theaters"? Or am I the only Adventist who still doesn't go to theaters?

I did watch it and was not very impressed. First off, the most obvious drawback should be that the writer is against...not just Christianity but God all together. I heard a direct quote of the writer on the radio once that went something like this "I don't believe that God exists, and if He does exist he deserves to be rebelled againts." Also, a big turn-off for any Adventist should be the fact that story depicts witches and gypsies as "good guys" protecting the girl and her magical golden compass from the evil magistrate. Witches in the Bible are absolutely despised, in the Old Testament they were stoned! and Gypsies aren't much better for their association with spirituality. Another element that should at least raise some eyebrows is the presented idea of a spirit that can be seperate from the body, which is a completely unbiblical concept. Aside from all that, the story itself wasn't very gratifying. i think that the movie is only made interesting to people by its extensive use of effects and its intricately designed fantasy world.

I liked the movie. For me it was more against institutionalized religion that seeks to control the masses rather than Christianity or God; so in that sense I liked it and can see that in pre-reformation times, the church did act in this way. Its up to the individual who wants to see it. I love movies. i love stories . . . the greatest story we have in the bible but i still enjoy other movies. i think we need to stop treating people like they unintelligent and naive so that if they watch this movie they will turn away from God . . .if that happens then i would suggest that the person never had a real faith in Christ in the first place. I say this as an adult, and I can understand the difference if we are talking about children. But Jesus never described the world as secular and religious. . . in God's eyes, everything is spiritual - all of life. a great shame of modern western christianity is that we compartmentalize our life - a spiritual life, a work life, a personal life... and we then compartmentalize people - this person is liberal this person is conservative. Its quite ridiculous. There will always be someone more conservative, there will be always someone more liberal.... the point is understanding what is important to us, where are my weaknesses and temptations. For me, I can watch a movie and find spiritual messages without it being a 'spiritual' movie, and in that sense I have a growing understanding of the people around me yet to find Jesus. That may not be true for someone else which is fine... but writing these sweeping generalizations that pigeon hole people is not helpful and narrow minded. God treats us with respect, although undeserving, by letting is choose, we should also do the same to our fellow brothers and sisters.
