Is It Taboo For Ladies To Wear Trousers?

We recently visited a local church and the minister was adamant about women not wearing trousers. What do you think?

Deu 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God. Does this verse pertain to trousers. Vote and discuss

    This is in refrance to hygien not to type of dress since the clothing in Bible times was not determined untill someone bought it. It also leads me to beleive that there should not be men trying to dress like women or vice versa.

    This is one debate that our church has failed to resolve because it is argumentative.
    Yes in those days men did not really wear trousers, and we have trousers specifically designed for women.
    The women should not dress in garments that are for a man and that is anything that will make a woman look like a man and vice verse.
    We have today men who dress up like women from tops, ladies trousers, hairstyle even the walk that you have to look twice due to confusion.
    I believe this is what Deu 22:5 is against.

    Can some please help us in this issue. With reference to the bible. What does christian standard mean is it only particular to a certain culture or its world wide.

    I believe that this is a matter of principle and should be taken as such. Men should not try to dress as women and women should not dress as men.
    Both men and women wear pants for practical purposes and not as a matter of accentuating themselves as is the case of a woman pantyhouse in her heels or a man wearing a tuxedo. A woman would wear a scarf on her neck to accentuate her face and neck where as a man would wear a tie. Can you imagine a man coming to church with a scarf around his neck and a woman wearing a tie? It is a principle that applies to each generation and culture.

    There is a basic principle behind all standards. However the application of the principle may change with time and culture. For example, Ellen White said that every woman should know how to harness a horse. That made sense in her day when the horse was the main mode of transport. I believe that if she was writing in 2008 to western people she would say that every woman should know how to drive a car and fill the tank. Applying this to trousers: In Biblical times men did not wear trousers like today, they wore something much more suited to the climate (and still do today in many parts of the Middle East). Therefore we cannot take the verse and apply it directly to trousers. We have to seek the principle behind the verse. It certainly cannot mean a simple change in dress, where the men might pass for women, and vice versa. This would have been impossible in those countries where the dress of the sexes had but little to distinguish it, and where every man wore a long beard. As the word גבר geber is here used, which properly signifies a strong man or man of war, it is very probable that armor is here intended. A number of commentators have suggested this verse aimed at preventing women sneaking into the camp for the purposes of immorality. There needs to be a distinction of the sexes for the preservation of our own and our neighbour's chastity. Wearing trousers or slacks is not a moral issue. Cross dressing for the sake of immoraity is. As I type it is snowing outside and in this climate slacks are a very practical for of dress for a woman. My wife works as a chaplain and in many of the situatiions she is in trausers / slacks are the most modest form of attire. Anyone who uses this verse to forbid the wearing of trousers by women is practising poor biblical scholarship and showing an ignorance of proper hermaneutics

    Being chistians, we are prone to criticisms especially in clothing. But it is very essential for the ladies to wear formal dresses rather than trousers, because if you are wearing formal dresses you will be respected by most of the people. Especially in Church. We are facing our great God and we have to show respect to Him. Even during our family worhip, we have to wear formal dresses. Not mini skirts, because it is a great insult for our creator.

    Notice: The text did not say "trousers", it said "men garments"...Did Jesus wear trousers? That's a moot point. The point is, "men should dress like men, and women like women"---trousers or not. Will any man be willing to walk around in the clothes style of Israel of old, when they wore basically long dresses made in a manly way---manly dresses?

    Two other passages of scripture could enter this discussion. 1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." 2Co 5:12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. Too often good clothes are allowed to hide a crooked heart. I have been at churches where everyone was so well dressed that when some poor people came they felt very out of place and never came back. Better to dress simply and modestly and let what shows to the world be a warm heart

    Can someone answer this for me??? What does this have to do with preaching the gospel??? If we spend our time condemning women for wearing slacks to church (which folks did to my mother years ago) is it a wonder we cannot bring people to Jesus Christ??? Is it a wonder why our people outside the Adventist faith look at us like they do??? So many people want to put a piece of cake on the cross or chocolate or a pair of slacks. This poor pastor totally misses the boat when it comes to the gospel. Jesus accepted the publicans and sinners. He even accepted the prostitute caught in the act of adultery. If He didnt condemn her then, He surely would not condemn her if she wore slacks to the synagogue.
