Both duck and goose are Biblicly clean foods for those in need of eating either. I prefer vege duck personally, since I cannot bring myself to kill and consume living creatures as long as I am not starving and having run out of plants and nuts for food. I suppose if I were starving I might be able to cook a foul rather than die, but I hope I am never placed in such a position.

Both duck and goose are clean to eat, but if anyone has a doubt, then stay away from eating them. The ideal is to be a vegetarian but on the road, I am flexible as to my diet, particularly when well-meaning folks invite you to a "sumptuous meal" of clean meat. Let's not miss the forest for the trees!

The criteria for a clean bird is that it is a foraging bird. Both ducks and geese are bottom-feeders.

What about chickens? Unclean birds are all scavengers. A chicken eats just about anything it can scavage. I eat chicken and turkey, but have always had this nagging question in the back of my mind. Any answers?
  6. quote 23.01.2008 15:25
I heard this third-person, but according to former Andrews University Professor
Samuele Bacchiocchi, in ancient times, women would perform unmentionable acts with swans as part of pagan temple rituals. Perhaps that is why the Mosaic Law excludes swans, but not duck or geese from the clean meat list. Maybe diseases could be passed from person to swan to person. Or maybe just the association of having been used in a pagan ritual was enough to ban the eating of swan meat. Early church leaders advised gentile Christians to abstain from eating animals offered to idols; animals which were strangled to death and meat with blood still in it. Animals were often tortured before being offered to idols. Supposedly the meat and blood from animals killed while under great duress is full of adrenalin and other hormones. I have heard that E.G. White wrote that people take on some of the behaviors of the animals they eat. I wonder if this suggests that human behavior is altered by ingesting animal hormones. I believe it is. I notice changes in my own behavior when I eat meat after a period of abstinence.

Maybe that explains why I'm such a chicken!

Oh dear, Samuele... I don't know abou the research that backs the "unmentionable acts" rituals, but:
Gods and girls were linked in mythology and storytelling long before the innunciation, and virgin birth. The Greek god Zeus took the form of a swan, and seduced Leda (of Spata) and she bore Helen (eventually of Troy).
I think these stories have more to do with the elegance and aloofness of the bird than with the possibility of any physical aberation. (and on another tack... the incarnation remains a "mystery", despite the futile attempts of literalist to explain it!)
back on tack: I do not think that they have much to do with "unclean" food. however, whatever the list in the ancient text, i suspect that the way chicken is raised today should be labelled "unclean" as well as "unnatural"

What do u guys think of bthe Ostrich? is it clean or unclean? The bible only mentions the ostrich in the Modern KJV. The other translations dosen't mention it. You can read in Lev 11:13-19 about the clean and the uncleb birds. There are some people that have done some research and claim that the "ostrich"is a clean bird, and as such it can be eaten. Has any one have any information about this from the original text...?

Biblically Clean and Unclean Meat According to Judaic Law and the Torrah

    1. Mammals - Mammals must have both cloven hooves and chew their cud. This includes many domesticated animals including cows, goats and sheep. It also includes a few non-domesticated animals as in many types of deer and even giraffes. If they have one but not the other they are not clean. Specifically mentioned in this unclean category are pigs, camels, rabbits, and the rock coney.
    2. Fish - fish must have both fins and scales. To have one without the other renders the fish unclean. This means many commonly eaten water animals such as shellfish, crab, shrimp, lobster, shark, marlin, catfish are unclean.
    3. Birds - The clean birds include chicken, turkey, duck, goose, dove, and pheasant. To be considered clean a bird must meet the following criteria.
    1. It is not a bird of prey.
    2. It does not have a front toes (or tearing talon)
    3. It must have a craw and a double lined stomach that is easily separated
    4. It can catch food thrown into the air, but it must lay it down and tear it with its beak before eating.
Most Orthodox Jews subscribe to these rules. There are some who will only eat those birds listed in the Torah. As a result while most Orthodox will eat turkey, these Orthodox will not.

Where would we be without the Torah? And isn't it great how explicit it is, and with so much detail.
It is almost true that you don't need to think, just know the rules!
But seriously, haven't we got liberty form legalism, and surely if our life (our eating and drinking included) is all to God's glory then.... (insert gospel story here)
Personally I am happy for every animal to live, and prefer it that way, but i know my salvation is not dependant on avoiding a prawn, or resolving the law to define eating/rejecting ostrich.
and - here is a challenge:
Peter's vision may well have been about the idiocy of "only Jews are clean enough to be saved", but it may also have have made him wonder about the reasonableness of his Kosher laws about "only these 7 birds are clean enough to eat"

As Adventists, we should embrace the whole message. The Bible and Spirit of Prophecy are the roadmap to a healthy lifestyle.

Cancers, tumors, and inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating. . . . Flesh diet cannot make good blood.--U. T., Nov 5, 1896.
    The eating of flesh meats has made a poor quality of blood and flesh. Your systems are in a state of inflammation, prepared to take on disease. You are liable to acute attacks of disease, and to sudden death, because you do not possess the strength of constitution to rally and resist disease.--T., V. II, p. 61. {HL 182.4}
    When we feed on flesh, the juices of what we eat pass into the circulation. . . .Thus a feverish condition is created, because the animals are diseased, and . . . we plant the seeds of disease in our own tissue and blood.--U. T., Nov. 5, 1896. {HL 182.5}

The Debate rages on but still no one gives us an absolute answer whether duck and goose are clean or unclean. Pastors Please help with this debate :-)
  14. quote 14.02.2008 02:26
Administrator, please add the "Ostrich" as well. There are some pastors here in South Africa that done some studies and are saying that the ostrich is clean. From the hebrew text. Any one with some conclusive comments. To answer WD..... As a perfect diet, here in an unperfect world, we should abstain from flesh foods. See the original diet given to Adam. We shouldn't ask the Creator why is it like that, even though the medical world with their latest discoverys are supporting simple diets. You mention the prawn. That is like a collesterol shot into ur system. They are the scavengers and the cleaners of the oceans. As u eat them u get all that dirt in to ur body. If u want ur car to function at its best u will follow the ouner's manual, isn't it? The bible is the Owner's manual. Follow it's instuctions and u will live long in the land.
  15. quote 15.02.2008 08:13

Does the ostrich have talons? What about a craw? Clean foul feed on grains, are not predatory with talons for killing prey, and have a craw to aide in digestion of grains. These are the simple guidlines to consummable foul. I personally choose not to consume other creatures, but I also refuse to condemn and point fingers of blame at anyone that does. If I feel something is wrong or have any doubts about it, I merely make certain I don't partake of it without getting my syhorts in a knot about what others do. We each must be convicted by the Holy Spirit in all things, and not go about trying to play Holy Spirit myself. The Bible explains very clearly what is and is not meat for consumption. I hope eacyh of us will go the the Word of God for ourselves and seek truth, and not blindly rely on a pastor or anyone else.

It is only in the KJV that swans are listed as unclean. Other translations refer to a Marsh Hen.
The webbed foot opinion is a guess that is based on the KJV translation and is not particularly strong.
A better test might be as to the kind of digestive system the bird has (similar to the "cud" chewing of land animals). As with other "clean" birds (such as turkey), both duck and goose have a gizzard and crop. It would seem logical, therefore that both birds are Biblically clean.
For those who believe that duck and goose are unclean, then according to Romans 14:14 they should NOT eat what they believe is unacceptable.
